Champlain Orchards: A Socially and Environmentally Responsible Business
At Champlain Orchards, we're devoted to providing a safe, supportive and friendly atmosphere for our employees. Our farm welcomes new employees as members of a family. We have 15 full-time U.S. employees, we welcome farm interns, and we hire and house the same crew of seasonal help from Jamaica through a federal guest worker program. Our recently constructed labor house affords employees a full kitchen, full bathroom and showers, high-speed internet and energy-efficient washer/dryers. Champlain Orchards is dedicated to educating farm visitors from school groups to elder hostel groups. Our passion is to help educate and raise awareness of the importance of local food production and distribution. We are dedicated to providing healthy, safe, affordable food to our community. We also provide fresh produce to Vermont FEED, a Farm-to-School program with a community-based approach in a rural state through a collaboration of three Vermont non-profits: Food Works at Two Rivers, Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont, and Shelburne Farms. We are also committed to investing in renewable forms of energy. We have worked with Efficiency Vermont to install state-of-the-art refrigeration systems in an attempt to conserve energy. We have recently installed an anemometer to analyze the winds coming off Lake Champlain. We hope to convert these winds into energy for our farm, becoming less and less dependent on the grid for energy. We are looking at options for solar energy as well, and plan on shifting our fleet of trucks to biodiesel fuel in the near future. We have recently begun working with Spring Hill Consulting, a company that is helping us to develop a broad strategy regarding our carbon management, clean energy, and sustainability efforts and goals. Thank you for your support! |
